July 6 // Balboa Foundations
July 6th is the Foundations of Balboa. This class is designed to be a great introduction into the style and technique of Balboa. Whether you have taken a Balboa class before or have never tried it, this class will provide you with the foundations you need to get on the dance floor! There is no partner required.
July 13 // Foundations of Rhythm: From Ears to Feet
July13th is the Foundations of Rhythm: From Ears to Feet. This class is designed to help you feel the rhythm of swing music and to express that rhythm through your body movements. Join DJ and dancer Daniel Hoy for a guided tour of the music we all love to dance to. Whether you are struggling to find the beat or trying to express the music through your dancing and improve that elusive “quality of movement”, this is class for you.
We’ll be listinging to great music, exploring swing rhythms, and doing exercises to help get these rhythms in your body so you can concentrate on dancing to the music, instead of just keeping time. This class will work on footwork and solo movement as it relates to both 6 ct and lindy hop basics. There is no partner required.
July 20 // Lindy Hop Foundations
July 20th is the Lindy Hop Foundations. This class is designed to be a quick introduction into the basics and technique of Lindy Hop, or a refresher to get those swingouts to feel more comfortable.Mark Calkins & Shannon Varner (a.k.a. The Lindyroos) will start with the footwork, and work in a lindy circle until we reach the swingout, all in a couple of hours.
Whether you have taken a Lindy Hop class before or have never tried it, this class will provide you with the foundations you need to get on the dance floor! There is no partner required.
July 27 // Solo Jazz Alphabet & Routine
July 27th is Solo Jazz Foundations. This class is designed to showcase authentic jazz dance vocabulary from the 1920s-1940s. We’ll explore how to break down a “move” into “movements” so you can play around with ideas after you leave the class.
6:30 – 7:30 PM: Let’s see how far we get with learning an “alphabet of solo jazz” dance moves including Apple Jacks, Boogie Back/Forward, Boogie drops, Charleston (20s), Crossovers, Fishtails, Gaze Afar, Hallelujah, Itches, Mess Around, Mooch, Pecks, Scarecrow, Shouts, Shorty George, Suzy Q, Tacky Annie, and Triple Step variations.
7:45 – 8:45 PM: Let’s put these moves into a short routine!
Dancer, DJ, and solo choreographer Binaebi Calkins will teach you historical moves and a short routine. By the end of class you’ll put your own spin on the moves and make the routine your own!
